    Personal Development

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development provides the foundation for personal development across our whole-school curriculum. At Oyster Park Primary Academy, we believe that SMSC is an essential part of every pupil’s education and is embedded throughout our curriculum, school values and daily practice.

Our approach to SMSC supports the delivery of a rich, inclusive and well-rounded curriculum that enables all children to develop academically, personally and socially. This commitment is reflected in the positive behaviours and relationships within our school community, as well as in our teaching practices, learning environments and resources.

Through SMSC education, we aim to help children develop a deeper understanding of themselves and others while exploring the moral, social and cultural challenges they may encounter as they grow. We provide opportunities for pupils to discuss their wellbeing, recognise and understand their emotions, and develop strategies to support positive mental health and resilience.

We also encourage children to understand their rights and responsibilities, value diversity, and recognise the importance of contributing positively to society. By fostering these qualities, we aim to equip pupils with the essential life skills, knowledge and experiences they need to thrive both now and in the future. Our SMSC curriculum continues to evolve to ensure it prepares children for the opportunities and challenges of an ever-changing world.

Personal Development is delivered through a whole-school approach and is taught explicitly across a range of curriculum areas, including Science, Computing, Physical Education (PE), Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE), Religious Education (RE), Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), and SMSC education. Across all subjects, we actively promote the Protected Characteristics, British Values, Cultural Capital, parental engagement and positive mental wellbeing, ensuring that every child is supported to become a confident, respectful and responsible citizen.
