Our French Intent

At Oyster Park Primary Academy, it is our intention that the learning of a Modern Foreign Language will inspire pupils with a curiosity and fascination about the world and its different languages and cultures that will remain with them throughout their lives. We aim to offer opportunities for children to explore a language in order to develop an understanding of the people who speak it, the cultural enrichment opportunities it provides and to improve their knowledge of and use other languages. We aim to promote the children’s interest and understanding about different languages, people, and cultures, together with deepening their understanding of their own language. It is our intention that learning a language will promote children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development helping them to have a greater understanding of their place in the world in an increasingly global world. We hope the children will develop an understanding of communicating in another language in both spoken and written form. We encourage the children to ask questions about different languages and cultures and provide opportunities for them to develop their understanding of these through stimulating activities that give them opportunity to discover a world beyond their local experience. It is our intention that the French curriculum will be both stimulating and motivating in order to capture the pupil’s curiosity and fuel their motivation to learn. The pupils should be provided with exciting learning opportunities so as they enjoy acquiring and developing their language skills and knowledge and value the learning of a language as a life skill. With a solid foundation upon which they can continue to build their knowledge, we hope that the children will continue to appreciate the richness of language.

Reading

In French, we cultivate a reading culture by exposing children to a variety of genres through carefully planned activities. In Key Stage 2, this will include developing strategies to read and understand increasingly longer texts from single words to longer phrases in LKS2 through to more complex and compound sentences in French in UKS2.

Oracy

Oracy is the ability to articulate ideas, develop understanding and engage with others through spoken language. In French, oracy is a powerful tool for learning. By teaching our pupils to become more effective speakers and listeners we aim to empower them to have a better understanding of themselves, each other and by developing their language acquisition and widening their vocabulary enable them to communicate with a wider community of people more effectively.

SEND

At Oyster Park Primary Academy, we are aware that a child’s foreign language ability is not directly related to their writing or Mathematic ability. All children are given the opportunity to express themselves in French with support appropriate to their SEN learning barriers. Children are encouraged and supported to listen to, speak, read and write in French.
